Wedding in Athens: Matt and Maria

by ElenaSergeeva

Matt and I met at university just outside London in 2005. I was studying Media Arts and he was completing a degree in Geology. We met on our first training day at the Student Union bar, and although we worked at the same place, we rarely had any shifts together. It was only after about a year of admiring him from afar that a mutual friend finally brought us together – quite literally! She knew I had a small crush on him, so one night at the Student Union Club – I think it was 80s night – she literally pushed me into him. He got beer all over his t-shirt and my face went bright red. We exchanged numbers, he said he’d cook for me (moussaka!), and the rest is wonderful history…

While he finished his degree – which turned into a PhD – I lived and worked in London and Canterbury. After about 3 years of travelling cross-country to see each other and deciding who’s flat we’d spend the night at, we finally took the plunge and moved in together. Two years later, in February 2011, Matt proposed in the most wonderful way. I came home after a very tiring day at work to find our flat completely transformed! Matt had turned it into a dark, spooky, treasure hunt: every nook and cranny, every item in the apartment, held a clue. The clues lead me from the living room, to the kitchen, to the bathroom and finally, to the bedroom where I opened the door to find Matt, surrounded by flowers, down on his knee, offering me a ring. I just burst into tears and almost forgot to say YES! It was truly magical and one of the happiest moments of my life.

I never wanted a long engagement so wedding preparations began almost straight away. I definitely knew I wanted to get married in Greeceby the sea, surrounded by our family and friends. The following month, I travelled to Athens to start looking at wedding venues. We looked at some truly beautiful locations, but there was only one that I could imagine myself getting married at. The stunning little white-washed church and the truly unique reception venue of Veghera at Grand Resort Lagonissi was everything I could have ever hoped for. It had the feel of being on an island, without ever having to leave the mainland.

I also loved the fact that the church was only a few feet away from the reception venue. It saved our out-of-town guests a lot of hassle getting from one place to the other. It was also ideal in that our guests could also spend the night there. It really was a one-stop wedding for everyone!

Now that we had the venue sorted, the next most exciting task was the dress. I was actually dreading this part because I knew how indecisive I could be. Luckily, my dream dress was actually one of the first ones I tried on. The full princess skirt and sweetheart neckline of the Pronovias dress was an absolute dream. I felt so comfortable in it: I danced in it until the morning – and if it was up to me, I would have slept in it too!

Dress sorted. Now for the invitations. We decided to go for a rustic look for the wedding, so we used a lot of burlap and twine and leather for our invitations, favours and table decorations. Much of it was handmade by VINTA, including our candy table, which featured stunning macarons, brownies, fudge, cake pops and the traditional sugared almonds. We really loved how everything came together – and so smoothly!
